Girls Go Green at CSW
As the fifty-third session of the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) gets underway, World YWCA and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) are ensuring the voices of young women are heard throughout the event. An evaluation of last year’s CSW revealed young women did not feel they had sufficient space to network, deliberate and strategise during the two-week long session, thus limiting their participation.
As such, the World YWCA and WAGGGS are hosting a Youth Organisation Caucus at this year’s CSW.
Young women participating at CSW are being urged to wear something green as they explore the equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV and AIDS. “We want young women’s issues to stand out at this CSW, not just through the work as a Caucus - but visually as well,” says World YWCA Communications Director Kaburo Kobia. “Green represents new life, energy, freshness and strength. We know CSW youth delegates bring these qualities to the table.”
The Youth Organisation Caucus will gather over the two weeks to ensure young women’s issues are reflected in the agreed conclusions of the CSW. “ It’s just exciting being at CSW this year and knowing that there is a special opportunity for young women to come together, share and network. Young women’s voices must shape the agenda of this year’s CSW, " said World YWCA General Secretary Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda.
Young women can contribute to the Youth Organisation Caucus through a variety of different ways. Get involved today!
