YWCAs in Peru and Lima providing long term support for earthquake victims

International

The YWCA of Peru continues with its relief efforts as the impact of the August 15 earthquake in southwest Peru begins to take its toll. BBC news reports that 1,300 people were injured in the earthquake and hospitals in the region are overwhelmed. Injured from the hardest hit areas of Pisco and Ica have been transported to Lima, the capital city of Peru for specialised medical treatment. Family members travel with the injured, but many cannot find or afford accommodation in Lima. The YWCA of Lima has stepped in to provide accommodation for these distressed families, currently providing accommodation for 25 people.

Volunteers from the YWCA of Peru and Lima are providing food and supplies for the people staying at the YWCA of Lima. Dr Musimbi Kanyoro, General Secretary of the World YWCA, offered encouragement to the YWCA of Peru in a letter sent on behalf of the World Board, staff and volunteers of the YWCA movement. In response to a TV news report featuring the efforts of the YWCA of Peru, donations of beds, mattresses, blankets and clothes along with monetary contribution have poured in from the community. “We have enough supplies to provide victims with food and shelter for a month,” says Silvanna Ayaipoma, General Secretary of the YWCA of Peru. In collaboration with the National Scouts office, the YWCAs of Peru and Lima are coordinating the donations to ensure an effective relief effort. The National Police are providing security for the people seeking shelter at the YWCA of Lima, reports Ayaipoma.

With over 200,000 people displaced as a result of the earthquake many families find themselves destitute. Homes and business have been destroyed and the country must begin to rebuild itself. The YWCA of Peru have already begun to help women prepare for a new life by providing training in new skills that would provide business and income opportunities. A workshop training women to make jewellery and accessories was opened for women affected by the earthquake. Suasana, a graduate from the YWCA of Peru computer programme, and accomplished jewellery designer is running the workshop.
