YWCA Supports Disaster Victims in El Salvador
Since October 1, 2005 when the Ilamatepec (Santa Ana) volcano erupted in El Salvador, the YWCA has been working tirelessly to respond to the immediate needs of affected communities, bringing volunteer labour, as well as food, blankets, and other emergency supplies. The situation has been aggravated by torrential rains from Hurricane Stan’s passage through the region, which caused flooding, landslides and many deaths. The death toll has reached 54 with approximately 50,000 people displaced.
The YWCA is supporting over 200 families in the affected communites where the association has programmes. Most of these families are female headed. The situation is however taking a toll on the organisations resources, and General Secretary, Carolina Letona, is appealing for assistance: “we urgently need help because of the emergency situation that we have in our country. We are visiting daily the areas most affected. Many of them cannot even be accessed by car because the heavy rains causing many houses to collapse, but we are still going there to help. We are making a call for your support. We appreciate your solidarity with our communities."
The YWCA of El Salvador welcomes donations in both cash and kind. Basic necessities are also needed, such as milk, beans, rice, sugar, salt, soup, oil, flour, oatmeal, pampers, sanitary napkins, and blankets.* Financial contributions can be sent in US dollars, directly to their bank account:
