Say NO – UNiTE — A Call to Action to End Violence against Women in Our Lifetime!
Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women is UNIFEM’s global internet-based platform launching on November 6, to count and showcase actions on the ground. It is a vehicle for partners to use for their own outreach and actions, yet brings local and global together in one package. By highlighting the groundswell of activism on the issue, Say NO drives the message to governments worldwide that ending violence against women and girls must be a top priority.
We have set a target of 100,000 actions by March 8, 2010 and 1 million by 25 November 2010.
What are “actions for change”?
Actions big and small all make a difference. Here are some ideas from us, but we are sure that you have many, many more.
- Organising a walk to end violence against women;
- Outreach to school children through special lessons or workshops;
- Running workshops and sensitisation trainings for police, judiciary, medical
- Organising a petition drive for a new law;
- Volunteering with a local women’s organisation or supporting women’s shelters;
- Starting a blogathon on ending violence against women and girls; and more…
How do we count actions?
How Can Say NO Work for You?
- Outreach and advocacy — build and brand your own web pages on the Say NO website with easy-to-use templates.
- Communications — report the number of actions, stories and updates, photos and videos from your events and activities. The Say NO website and monthly newsletters will broadcast your action stories globally.
- Public engagement — do you have an ongoing petition drive? Organizing an awareness walk? Screening a film on the issue? You can gain new supporters for your cause! On your action pages people can sign a petition, RSVP to a real event or join a virtual march.

- By showcasing your actions, Say NO projects a global momentum for ending violence against women and girls and demands that governments make this a top priority.
