World YWCA Joins Ecumenical Delegation to Haiti
“ Women, men and children in Haiti need the support of the international ecumenical community, including advocacy at the global level. As we witness first hand the devastating effects of the 2008 hurricanes and the rising food prices, we stand in solidarity with the people of Haiti and pray for hope and peace” said Marie-Claude Julsaint, World YWCA Programme Director for Americas and the Caribbean.
Julsaint is part of the ecumenical ‘Living Letters’ team that will pay a solidarity visit to Haiti from November 24-28. The team will visit the capital city of Port-au-Prince, areas affected by recent hurricanes, local Christian communities, civil society organisations, humanitarian agencies and political representatives.
Haiti has been facing challenges of corruption, violence, political instability and food crisis. This year a succession of hurricanes flooded many areas of the country and left thousands of people homeless and the agricultural sector, destroyed.
“ As a Haitian, I am particularly concerned with the situation. I am honoured to be part of the WCC delegation to Haiti,” said Julsaint.
The ‘Living Letters’ visit is organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) as part of its Decade to Overcome Violence (2001-2010), an initiative promoting peaceful alternatives to violence. The delegation will be hosted by the Protestant Federation of Haiti in collaboration with ecumenical and church agencies based in the country.
