CSW 2012 will give the floor to Rural Women

Date: February 27-March 9, 2012

The theme for the fifty-sixth session in 2012 is "The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges".

This coming February the World YWCA and a number of Member Associations will participate in the fifty-sixth session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York. Every year, the Commission meets to discuss gender equality and prepare recommendations for the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The World YWCA regularly participates in the Commission as an accredited NGO. This year the organisation will again contribute to the agreed CSW Conclusions through lobbying efforts, participation and leadership in various caucuses.

The theme for the fifty-sixth session in 2012 is "The empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges". With a strong presence in rural communities around the world, the YWCA has the capacity to give significant input to the CSW on this issue. The 2012 session will also focus on reviewing the theme of "Financing for gender equality and the empowerment of women" ( agreed conclusions from the fifty-second session).

The World YWCA will be using the CSW platform to advance the new Strategic Framework 2012-2015 by advocating for continued implementation of global commitments on women, including CEDAW and UNSCR 1325, with a particular focus on engaging rural women in the peace building process. The World YWCA also plans to host a women's intergenerational dialogue, which has become a trademark of the YWCA's participation at the CSW over recent years; and to progress the climate change resolution adopted at Council by hosting a side event on the impact of climate change on women in rural communities in collaboration with partners.

Presided by Ms Bachelet, UN Women Executive Director, the CSW panel will bring together researchers, experts from Food and Agriculture Organisations, members of NGOs and grass-roots organisations.

The World YWCA has participated at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women since its establishment in 1948. As the leading global platform for advancing women's human rights, CSW continues to be an important and strategic annual event for the World YWCA.
