Save Fukushima's Children
Women from Fukushima, Japan, have started a campaign to demand greater protection for children affected by radiation. Many families and children are trapped in Fukushima and are unable to leave for financial reasons. National and prefectural governments have determined that the accepted exposure rate to radiation is up to 20 millisieverts per year, and below that rate they are not obligated to offer financial support to residents, businesses or schools that wish to relocate outside the affected areas. At Chernobyl the right to evacuate was given from 1 to 5 millisieverts.
The women and mothers of Fukushima are calling for two things. First, they want to protect children living in highly contaminated areas by giving them the officially sanctioned ‘right to evacuate.' This would include government compensation and support that would enable children and their families to relocate on a voluntary basis. Secondly, they want to close down all nuclear power plants in Japan.
The demonstrators face considerable opposition and a comprehensive plan on how to deal with the contamination has yet to be drawn up. The women set November 11 as the deadline to receive a response from the State. As we wait for the Governments response, join the public outcry and sign the petition to demand support for the children of Fukushima.
