Sayonara to Nuclear Energy

On September 19, 2011, 60,000 people gathered in the heart of Tokyo to demand an end to nuclear power in Japan and a switch to alternative energy after the crisis at the Fukushima plant hit by the march 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The event and the petition for the “Realisation of Denuclearisation and a Society Focused on Natural Energy,” was organised and promoted by some of Japan’s leading writers, journalists, musicians, and it was supported by countless individuals and grassroots groups, including the YWCA of Japan.

The YWCA of Japan has already collected over 800 signatures against the use of nuclear energy at the World YWCA Council in Zurich. The goal is to submit 10,000,000 signatures. The YWCA of Japan calls on our support to stop nuclear power in Japan and urges the world to stop its nuclear dependency.

The petition demands (a) the cancellation of construction plans for new nuclear power plants and the planned termination of existing nuclear power plants; (b) the termination of the fast-breeder reactor “Monju” and the nuclear processing plants which use plutonium; and (c) the immediate shift in energy policy towards energy conservation and the use of natural sources of energy
