Carolyn Flowers and Deborah Thomas

After a voting session which reached a 100 percent voter turnout rate, the new President and Treasurer of the YWCA World Board were announced. The crowd gave a standing ovation and vociferous cheer to Deborah Thomas who was elected as president and Carolyn Flowers who will serve as the next treasurer.  Dancing and celebration ensued as the calypso YWCA song of Grenada played over the loudspeakers. 

Deborah Thomas is from Trinidad & Tobago, where she served as the President of the YWCA of Trinidad & Tobago from 2003-2005. During her tenure, she led the development of a strategic plan, employee handbook and policy and procedure manual as well as many other key mechanisms to support continued good governance in the YWCA.  Ms. Thomas has served as Vice-President of the World YWCA and continues to lead and support the movement within the Caribbean. Thomas is currently the Managing Director of East Port of Spain Development Company in Trinidad and lectures part-time at the University of the West Indies.

Carolyn Flowers is from the United States of America, where she is currently the Regional Manager of the YWCA’s Southeast Region. Previously, she served as the CEO of her local YWCA since 2001. Ms. Flowers came to the YWCA with over twenty-five years of banking and finance experience.  Flowers served on the board of the World YWCA, and has served on over thirty boards in various capacities. Carolyn Flowers is currently pursuing a certificate in non-profit management at Duke University. 

Deborah and Carolyn will begin their terms after World Council and will act as President and Treasurer until 2015.
