World YWCA Day – A day to celebrate, reflect and rejoice together! 2010
YWCA of Rwanda celebrate the World YWCA Day

On 24 April 2010, a much awaited yearly tradition, which has been upheld since 1947, will once again take place: Through a variety of programs, YWCA's across the globe will unite for a common global goal by actively celebrating WORLD YWCA DAY. They will commemorate the history of the movement they are so proud of and reflect on this year's chosen theme “Women Creating a Safe World” (theme of World Council 2011).

Each association will mark the day in its own way. While Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, General Secretary of the World YWCA will spend the day in the USA and Susan Brennan, World YWCA President, will attend the YWCA “Round the World Breakfast” in Taiwan, thousands of members and friends of the YWCA will come together in myriad countries on each continent – from Latin America to Australasia, from the USA to Africa and from Asia to Europe - in order to participate in a number of events, share their experiences and spend a wonderful day together. This special day will be an opportunity to strengthen ties with the movement, increase awareness of the YWCA's actions, raise funds, honour women leaders in the YWCA and motivate members to participate in World Council 2011, which will be held in Zurich, Switzerland.

World YWCA President Susan Brennan and World YWCA General Secretary Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, in World YWCA Day messages, encourage the YWCA movement to continue creating the world women want to live in. " In the YWCA, we believe in shared, intergenerational and transformative leadership; we believe in leadership which creates a new world… On this day we rejoice in the leadership of women in creating safe spaces: spaces in which women live free from violence, armed conflict, poverty and discrimination, spaces in which all women are free to reach their full potential. In communities in every corner of the globe, YWCA women will gather to affirm how together we can create a safe world. It is a time to honour a special woman who has inspired you, to reflect on your own part in leading change and to open your hearts to the YWCA of the future" says Susan Brennan.

"As a movement we are coming together fifteen years after the Beijing Conference to celebrate, but also to continue to seek ways in which more women and girls in our communities can live a life free of violence and also a life, which continues to respect, and support women living with HIV and AIDS," emphasizes Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda.
