As a state of emergency remains in Christchurch, New Zealand following a 7.1 earthquake that struck the region on Saturday morning, the YWCA of Christchurch has reported that all staff, board and members are well.

“ The Shelter for women has no issues and the women coped well,” says YWCA of Christchurch President Cheryl Moffat. “The Cashel Street site is closed for the students in the education programmes until the building is checked by a structural engineer. It is a precaution only as there is no evidence of major issues and the staff are working there.”

The Community Kitchen has been closed however, the YWCA of Christchurch has delivered frozen meals to the very needy people in the community. “The staff of YWCA of Christchurch have been tremendous, especially Manager Leigh Steel. We are still experiencing aftershocks. Sometimes it is quiet for some time and then we get a few within an hour. Although to some extent we are expecting the aftershocks, it is still stressful,” says Cheryl.

Officials are worried that the biggest aftershock has not yet struck, and schools will remain closed until Civil Defence and Ministry of Education staff assesses the safety of buildings.

Reports state that about 250 people are staying in welfare centres and health authorities reported two families at one centre, had contracted gastroenteritis. 3500 homes were still without power, and it is estimated 100,000 of the 160,000 homes in the Selwyn, Christchurch and Waimakariri areas were damaged. Already, 431 homes have been identified as likely to be demolished but that number is expected to grow.

The YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand stands in support with YWCA of Christchurch and will continue to update YWCA members and partners as news comes to hand.
