YWCA of Grenada holds leadership seminar
Thanks to the Power to Change fund and in-kind donations from local sponsors, the YWCA of Grenada held its second annual one-day leadership seminar for secondary school students, on June 2, 2011, at the Grenada Youth Centre. This year the theme was “Youth Leadership – The Gateway to Action for Empowerment” and the Slogan of the day was “Discovering the Leader Within Me” . A total of 54 form 2 and 3 students had the opportunity of attending the seminar - three students were selected from each school, as well as from institutes such as the New Life Organisation (NEWLO) and Programme for Adolescent Mothers (PAM). The students were accompanied by a teacher from each of the participating schools.
Mr. Kevin Andall, Coordinator for the Ministry of Youth Empowerment delivered the feature address. He commented on how enlightening the topics covered in this year’s seminar were, and how they encouraged individuals to become good leaders through positive actions and thinking. Other attendees included YWCA Board members and representatives from the media.
The numerous topics covered included Leadership Skills Building & Team Work; How to become an effective Leader ; Your Health and You; How to handle Failures; Conflict Resolution & Anger Management and Self-Esteem.
The YWCA especially targets young women because it believes that educational training and personal development skills will allow them to become the leaders of tomorrow. The seminar guides them in making important life decisions and equips them for the world of work, and is also an opportunity for them to openly share their concerns with others.
Both the students and the teachers were very enthusiastic about the seminar and its content, which they felt demonstrated that hard work is always ultimately rewarded. At the end of the seminar each student proudly received a certificate from Ms. Joan Duncan, YWCA Board member, and bookmarks were also offered as a small token. Seminar volunteers, staff and sponsors were all thanked for their generous contribution and hard work.
This seminar clearly fits in with the World YWCA movement’s new 2012-2015 Strategic Framework, which emphasises the need to prioritise developing the leadership and collective power of women, young women and girls, and provide opportunities for global exposure and advocacy.
