World Council and IWS 2007

The quadrennial meeting of the World YWCA concluded successfully on July 11, 2007.

The World YWCA Council 2007 was unprecedented in numerous ways. Nearly 2000 people attended the opening of the International Women’s Summit on HIV and AIDS – the highest participation ever for the Council. Over 80% of the movement was present for the World YWCA Council, with over 100 nationalities representing close to 95 associations.

Young Women - YWLF

Bringing together young women from diverse cultures and backgrounds, the Young Women's Leadership Forum explored issues of global concern to young women including poverty, violence, human rights and sexual and reproductive health. Challenging speakers and thought provoking sessions identified solutions and developed skills for young women to be effective agents of change. The two day event ensured young women's issues were integrated into the broader agenda of the YWCA movement, and offered opportunities to build networks and discover new cultures.

Capacity Building

These pre-council meetings prepare new associations for affiliation and offer training in management and movement building skills. Selected additional YWCAs will also be invited to enhance the learning. Attendance is by invitation only.

Africa Partnership Safari

June 28-30, 2007

A three day field trip offers participants a chance to meet and share with women in African countries, to learn about their communities and the challenges they face especially in the context of HIV and AIDS, and to visit YWCA programmes implemented in response to these challenges.

Extraordinary WC

The Extraordinary World Council, called at the 2003 Council, will affiliate new associations and vote on the proposed revised World YWCA constitution.

Worship

Daily worship services will explore the themes of the World YWCA Council and International Women's Summit with text from the Bible, stories, dance and music.
