The World YWCA Safe Space Hub provides a place where women, young women and girls can openly share their experiences and challenges, access information, develop more awareness of their rights and build their capacity to claim these rights as empowered leaders, decision makers and change agents.
At the International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, the Safe Space Hub will provide information on where to go for HIV testing, how to live a fulfilled life when you are HIV positive and how to access comprehensive youth-friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) information and services. It will also build the capacity of young women and girls living with HIV, so they can articulate their needs during global and regional dialogues and promote accountability among decision makers to ensure the HIV response is young and gender- friendly.
Building on lessons learned from World YWCA participation at previous International AIDS conferences, the organisation’s objectives for AIDS 2016 are to:
- Provide an opportunity for young women in the YWCA movement who are either living with HIV or leading work on human rights, SRHR, HIV and AIDS to share their experience with the global AIDS community, including faith-based organisations.
- Create an #Egumeni Safe Space for young women to engage with key decision makers in the global and regional HIV and AIDS response sector.
The World YWCA is calling upon governments, UN agencies, NGOs and civil society actors to support and provide:
- Comprehensive sexuality education for both in and out-of-school adolescent girls through a holistic and integrated approach which involves all stakeholders.
- Affordable and quality reproductive health services, including HIV prevention, treatment and care, both in urban and rural areas, to all girls and women in all their diversity.
Safety from violence for all girls and women of all ages in all their diversity by taking legislative measures and creating safe spaces where survivors of violence can access a full range of legal, health, social and economic services.
