December 2010: Women Creating a Safe World
From July 10 to 16, 2011, the World YWCA will convene the 27th World Council in Zurich, Switzerland, providing a rich platform for member associations to discuss and debate issues, and setting the course for the next four years and beyond. Alongside the Council, the International Women’s Summit (IWS) will take place from July 12-13. Participants will include YWCA delegates from over 100 countries plus leaders from women’s, faith-based and youth organisations and UN agencies involved in advocacy gender equality and human rights at the international and country level. The IWS will feature a wide range of activities, sessions and exceptional speakers to discuss the theme of “Women Creating a Safe World”, and to define safe, equitable and inclusive spaces and programmes for women and girls in the context of CEDAW and commitments to the Millennium Development Goals.
In this edition of Common Concern we highlight the 2011 World YWCA Council theme, “Women Creating a Safe World". At a time when the world’s attention is drawn to political and financial unrest, the daily challenge of safety remains a reality in many communities around the world.
