The #MeToo campaign has highlighted the need for powerful new ways to promote gender equality and to create Safe Spaces, both physical and virtual, to enable the voices of marginalised women to be heard. It has fuelled an ongoing conversation, which the United Nations system urgently needs to seize upon, to promote equality, dignity and respect, and counter harassment, discrimination and abuse.

SEVEN is a transformative theatre piece that has travelled 42 countries, touching tens of thousands of people with the stories of seven remarkable women who courageously overcame abuse of power and advanced the rights of women and girls. The act of reading their respective testimonies transcends the mere recognition of their activism: through the readers’ words, the characters recover their own unstifled voices, and by the same means, their dignity.

On 14 June 2018, with GCSP and other partners, we are bringing SEVEN to the United Nations system for the first time. Convening leaders from NATO, civil society, the human rights and humanitarian community, politicians and policy makers, at the Palais de Nations in International Geneva, we will promote Safe Spaces at all levels of society – in homes, workplaces, communities, humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, and nations.
